Essilor Visual Fatigue Solution Lenses

Overview of Visual Fatigue Syndrome
Visual Fatigue Syndrome or VFS, is caused by focusing on objects 1 to 3 feet away for extended periods of time.  Today’s visual demands place greater stress on near and intermediate vision.  Focusing on near and intermediate objects for long periods of time causes our eyes to become strained, resulting in VFS.

In a recent study of more than 100 patients 25 years and older, respondents averaged between 6 and 7 hours per day at a computer.  Computer use has found to be the most common source of VFS.  Cell phones, PDA’s and video games also lead to VFS.  While technology has certainly enhanced our lives, it has also placed additional stress on our eyes.

Many professions, such as accounting, engineering, administration, and design require extended intermediate and near vision viewing.  Hobbies such as reading, scrap booking, woodworking, needlepoint, fly tying, and detailed craft work have also increased near and intermediate visual demands.  VFS has become a growing concern since up to 83% of patients experience some form of VFS. 71% of patients that wear corrective lenses, still experience symptoms of VFS.  25% of patients suffer from some form VFS everyday.  However, most people do not understand why they experience symptoms of VFS or that a solution exists to alleviate these symptoms.

If you experience 2 or more of the following symptoms on a regular basis, you may be suffering from VFS.

The most common reported symptoms of VFS are:

  • Dry eyes
  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Neck pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of productivity
  • Decreased vision at night.

Visual Fatigue syndrome is not permanent.  If you are able to remove activities during your day that require you to look at close-up objects for extended periods, you would probably no longer experience VFS.   While this is not an option for most people, the good news is that a special pair of lenses can help your eyes reduce these symptoms.  Some may just be able to replace their current glasses with a different pair that is specifically designed to alleviate the symptoms of VFS.  Others, especially presbyopes, may need an additional pair for task-specific activities.

Please remember that different eyeglasses accomplish different things and no one lens is best suited for all activities.  If you do spend an extended period of time doing task specific activities such as reading, desk work or use a computer, you may need task specific glasses.  Essilor’s Visual Fatigue Solutions™ lenses are specifically designed to help relieve symptoms of today’s visually demanding world.

  • Ordered in the same manner as any progressive addition lens.

Technical characteristics:

  • Designed using an asymmetric right and left.
  • Available in clear polycarbonate.
  • When ordering, please specify the distance Rx, reading add, fitting height dotted to the center of the pupil and monocular distance PD’s.
  • Minimum fitting height is 15mm.
  • Minimum B measurement of selected frame is 30mm.
  • Systematically available with EVC, Crizal, Crizal Alize and Avance with Scotchguard.

Conclusion
Visual Fatigue Syndrome impacts people of all ages with different visual needs.  It affects people who have 20/20 vision and even those who wear glasses, contacts or have undergone refractive eye surgery.  Conventional vision correction may not be enough to relieve the symptoms of VFS.  Specialized Visual Fatigue Solution Lenses may be required to adequately address Visual Fatigue Syndrome.
